South Island - New Zealand

Invercargill is the most southern town of New Zealand and was first settled by Europeans in 1856,
when a flax milling industry was set up in the area. Before this time the area was a popular Maori settlement.
Most of the streets in the town show the early Scottish and English influence by being named after rivers in Scotland and the UK.

Invercargill today offers a wide range of accommodation and attractions.
Invercargill has enjoyed a recent resurgence with increasing growth and economy.
The town itself has many historic buildings and offers true southern charm and character.

While in Invercargill you must drop in to the Tuatarium at Southland’s Museum and Art Gallery.
Where you will see no less than 50 Tuataras ranging in age from newborn to over 100 years old!
These unique creatures hark back to prehistoric times and are certainly not to be missed!

At the same time visit the beautiful Botanic Gardens surrounding the
Southland Museum and Art Gallery and Visitor Information Centre.

And if you’re lucky you might even encounter the famous ‘Southern Lights’ or ‘Aurora Australis’
that are a phenomenon in these southern skies!
