Middlemarch, Central Otago, New Zealand


Middlemarch2Middlemarch lies in the Strath Taieri Valley at the foot
of the Rock and Pillar Range and is an hour’s drive
 inland from Dunedin.
The climate is hot and dry in summer with cold winters.

The Otago Central Rail Trail either starts or ends
at Middlemarch and is very popular with cyclists and walkers,
this rail trail has a total length of 150 km.

The Taieri Gorge train takes a scenic train ride through the Taieri Gorge
from Dunedin to Middelmarch, an experience not to be missed.

Sutton Salt Lake is New Zealand’s only inland salt lake.
It is included in a large scenic reserve with a marked walkway by the lake.

Visit the Strath Taieri Historical Museum.
Here you will find the submarine “Platypus”, this was built in Dunedin in 1873 for the purpose of dredging gold.
