Lawrence, Gateway to Central Otago, New Zealand


Lawrence, a beautifully preserved historic goldmining town founded
in 1861 after the discovery of gold.

Gabriel’s Gully

 a must for your “To Do List”, is the main site where goldmining
took place during the goldrush of the 1800’s. 
It is a reserve today with extensive walking trails and picnic areas to explore.
Remember to take your gold pan or hire one from the Information Centre
 at Lawrence to try your luck in the river.
There is still gold to be found! 


Also take time out to do the Lawrence Heritage Trail.
Information Leaflets are available at the Lawrence information Centre.
The Heritage Trail takes you around the small historic town and delves
into its intriguing history, covering many of its historic buildings and sites.


The History of this small town is so well preserved that the
Historic Places Trust has no less than 50 buildings under its protection today

The Heritage Trail offers a wonderful opportunity to experience what
a small goldmining town may have been like during the goldrush era.


You can even become an honorary Citizen of this lovely historic town.
Register at the Lawrence Information Centre to be recorded in the
official citizens register!

Lawrence offers some excellent places to stay and numerous cafes, bars and restaurants. 
The activities are endless so delve into goldmining history and take a trip back in time to Lawrence.
