Lake Matheson

Lake Matheson world famous through its striking mirror reflections of Mount Cook and Mount Tasman is just 6 kms west from
Fox Glacier.
On fine, clear days the reflections are a photographers dream.
There is a walking track around the lake, this takes approx.
one hour to complete.

At Gilespies Beach you can walk along a wild, stony beach littered with driftwood past old gold workings, tunnels and abandoned machinery through the forest to a seal colony where seals can be observed in their natural state… lolling about on the beach, fighting, lumbering along, and plunging into the ocean from the rocks.20 minutes from Lake Matheson will take you to Gillespies Beach with several walks, including a four hour return trip to a fur seal colony.
