Orepuki first came into existence when gold was discovered in the black sand of Orepuki beach in 1865.
Other industries to come and go in Orepuki have been sawmilling, coal mining, a shale works,
a smelter to extract platinum, a flax mill and farming .
Farming is still the main industry today. Today a tavern is the most prominent business in the main centre.
