Riverton, a peaceful historic town, is one of the oldest European settlements in New Zealand and lies on the Southern Scenic Route and South Coast heritage trail. The history of the region will be portrayed in its new Heritage and Tourist Centre "Te Hikoi- Southern Journey". The town features gift, souvenir and arts and craft shops and an arts centre and also a variety of places to eat out or buy food, pleasant beaches and a wetland reserve
Mores Reserve, just up the hill from Longwood Holiday Park, has several easy bush walks and stunning views of Foveaux Strait and Stewart Island.
Local activities include walking tracks, Heritage Trail, swimming, river and sea fishing, surfing, jet boating and golf, squash, indoor and outdoor bowls. Charter boating/fishing trips.
Many interesting day trips nearby to historic places and other parts of the beautiful local coastline.

Take your time as you travel along the Southern Scenic Route between Catlins and Fiordland. Make Riverton an overnight stopover place, not a place to hurry through.
