European settlement of Invercargill began in 1856 when settlers set up a flax milling industry in the area. Before this time the area had always been popular with Maori. The town’s streets show the great influence the early Scottish and English migrants had in this area with most of the streets being named after rivers in Scotland and the UK.
Invercargill today offers a wide range of accommodation and attractions. Invercargill has enjoyed a recent resurgence with increasing growth and economy. The town itself has many historic buildings and offers true southern charm and character.
