Livingstone is a small settlement in inland Waitaki. It is located northeast of Danseys Pass, some 30 kilometers northwest of Oamaru.
The Livingstone gold fields are nearby, where gold was found, but due to the fine nature of its makeup, the gold proved to be hard to accumulate and the Livingstone gold company went broke in the 1920s. There is still evidence of gold mining in the area and you will find slucings and water races.
Livingstone Gold is a distinctive North Otago sharp flavored cheese produced in a traditional open vat.
A natural additive, annatto is added to produce its golden color, inspiration for naming it Livingstone Gold came from the historic Livingstone goldfields.
