Murchison calls itself the "Whitewater Capital" of New Zealand, nearby rivers include the Gowan River, Mangles River, Matiri River, Glenroy River, Matakitaki River, Maruia River, and the Buller. These rivers are also world renowned for fly fishing for large brown trout. Located on the edge of the Kahurangi and Nelson Lakes National Parks, there are many walks nearby. Murchison is approximately 130km southwest of Nelson, on the river flat at the junction of the Matakitaki and Buller Rivers. State Highway 6 to the West Coast follows the Buller River and traverses some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. The town lies at the southern gateway to Kahurangi National Park. To the east lies Nelson Lakes National Park.
