  Nelson lies on the southern shore of Tasman Bay, at the northern end of the South Island and is surrounded by mountains on three sides.
The Nelson region is the sunniest area of New Zealand with golden beaches and three National parks; the Abel Tasman National Park, Kahurangi National Park and the Nelson Lakes National Park with Lakes Rotoiti and Rotoroa. The main places in the Nelson Region are: the city of Nelson, Richmond, Motueka, Takaka, Golden Bay, Murchison and Saint Arnaud.

Nelson is a centre for arts and crafts, and each year hosts the Nelson Arts Festival. The annual Wearable Art Awards began near Nelson and a museum, World of Wearable Art, is now housed close to Nelson Airport showcasing winning designs.
Nelson has a vibrant local music and arts scene. These include Potters, Glass Blowers, Artists and dozens of Wood carvers. Dining out is a culinary experience, enjoy fine foods, superb wines, freshly caught seafood at the waterfront restaurants. The Taste Nelson festival is held each year to celebrate these culinary delights.

Nelson is a centre for both ecotourism and adventure tourism. The Abel Tasman national Park, named after the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman who visited the area in 1642, can be explored by guided walks, sea kayak, cruise boat, water taxi or freedom walking - experience penguins, seals, dolphins and native birds all set in lush native forest and beautiful beaches.
