Visit Mackenzie Country New Zealand
Incredibly clear starry nights, brilliant sunny days, remarkable turquoise blue lakes, valleys of emerald green, snow-capped mountains and glaciers contribute to a truly breathtaking experience.
Welcome to the Aoraki Mount Cook Mackenzie region! This is a powerfully emotive landscape, over one million acres of high golden tundra encircled by sky piercing mountains - so come, put yourself in touch with nature in one of its grandest schemes - Aoraki Mt Cook Mackenzie - New Zealand’s treasure highland.
The Mackenzie Country is dramatic, its vast landscape punctuated by stunning glacial lakes and the bold man-made canal system which delivers hydro-generated energy to the cities and towns of New Zealand.
Make time to explore one of the world’s most energising regions, which when combined with the legendary hospitality of its people, will imprint a never to be forgotten vision in your memory.
The welcoming atmosphere is most manifest in the cafes and restaurants throughout the region as well as in the great choices of accommodation from luxury lodge, hotel, motor inn, farmstay, holiday park to backpacker hostels.
Mt Cook - limited accomodation options, but you are right there at Mt Cook (no ski field at Mt Cook - but excellent Tasman Glacier day skiing or heli-skiing, and ski touring based at high alpine huts). Good short and longer walks not too far from the village. Ball Pass Trek great way to get up into the mountains if you're a fit hiker. If you are going to stay up here buy your grocery type items elsewhere and bring them with you.
Accomodation is available either at the Hermitage www.mount-cook.com/ and its associated chalets or Aoraki Alpine Lodge /www.aorakialpinelodge.co.nz/ or Glenntanner holiday park ~~~~~~~~~ The small town of Twizel is the main service centre for the McKenzie Country. Orginally built as a village for the construction workers on the hydro stations in the area. It was meant to be dismantled at the end of the construction, but the town refused to die. Stop in for coffee and pizza at Shawty's or Poppies
Tekapo offers good walkways and some mountain bike trails with beautiful lake and mountain views from just about everywhere. The clear night skies provide you with unique star gazing. Scenic flights over the Southern Alps can be enjoyed from Tekapo. There are also ski fields near by, Roundhill and Mt Dobson
Lake Ohau ('wind' in Maori) and Ohau Village, a small ski village, which is during the summer holidays also popular by the locals .
Omarama world famous for gliding. Gliding is offered at local airfield in the summer months for those wanting to have a go.
