Waikawa, Catlins, New Zealand

Waikawa, Catlins
The coastline around Waikawa is teeming with wildlife.
The rare Yellow-eyed penguins which nest all around the area as well as other
New Zealand natives which include the Muttonbird, the black shag,
the native wood pigeon, Tui, Bellbird, Fantail, and the Pukeko.
All of which are often seen around the Waikawa harbour.  A true nature lovers paradise.
Waikawa was once a bustling port town. Whaling, saw milling, gold mining,
stone quarrying, flax milling and dairy farming were all popular industries at one stage.
However today farming and eco-tourism are the main income earners for the area.
