Garston is New Zealand's most inland village with a population of 106. Located on the main tourist route between Queenstown and Milford and Doubtful Sounds, Garston is situated in the picturesque Upper Mataura Valley of the Southern Lakes district. The Upper Mataura valley, which was originally carved out by a glacier, is the source of the world-famous Mataura River and has the Eyre Mountains to the west and the Slate Range and Hector Mountains to the east. The areas has sheep, cattle and deer farming. Garston is central to Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown, and Lakes Te Anau and Manapouri.
Of historical interest are the Roman Catholic from 1903 and the Presbyterian from 1923 Churches, the cemetery, the ski hut on the Nevis Valley road and the stables alongside the Hotel.
Garston has a school, a picnic area with playground, a Visitor Information Centre (with public toilets), hotel, homestays, countrystay, petrol/service station, and a community hall.
Garston is the gateway to a popular four-wheel-drive route through the Nevis Valley linking Garston and Bannockburn/Cromwell. Also the Pub to Pub Bannockburn Gutbuster Bike ride is an annual event through the Nevis Valley route.
Fishing access to the Mataura River is available at several designated points.
